Back to the jungle - a zookeeper’s return to Sumatra

In 2024, I (Toronto Zookeeper, Sarah) had the incredible opportunity to return to Sumatra with Raw Conservation Adventures and the Sumatran Ranger Project, alongside a group of passionate colleagues. Coming all the way from Canada, the journey is anything but short—but every layover, flight, and mile was more than worth it. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by our amazing leader, Lauren. Her energy and knowledge immediately set the tone for what would become an unforgettable adventure.

Mornings in the Jungle

Each day began with the magical soundtrack of the Sumatran rainforest: gibbons and siamangs calling from the treetops, birds singing overhead, the river flowing steadily nearby. Occasionally, we’d even be startled (and amused) by a troop of Thomas Leaf monkeys dashing across our cabin roofs. It was a wild, immersive way to start the day—literally.

Breakfasts were always a highlight, not just for the food but for the connection, great conversation and a cheerful “selamat pagi” from the rangers made every morning feel like home. Once we were packed and prepped, it was off to the worksite.

Conservation Work on the Ground

We were fortunate to work alongside some of the most passionate and dedicated individuals I’ve ever met. Together, we helped build a livestock corral—a complex task that required serious teamwork, strength, and stamina.

The process was fascinating: gathering bamboo, building rafts to float it down the river, unloading it into trucks, transporting it to the site, and then digging, constructing, reinforcing, and securing the final corral structure with bamboo and barbed wire. In just five days, our team of seven completed a corral that would serve five farming families and protect 50 cattle.

What made the experience so rewarding wasn’t just the physical outcome—it was knowing the real, on-the-ground impact. The corral provides peace of mind for farmers, protection for livestock, and helps prevent human-wildlife conflict, especially with tigers.

This hands-on initiative not only protects local livelihoods but also plays a crucial role in preventing human-wildlife conflict, one of the biggest threats to critically endangered Sumatran tigers.

Into the Wild

After finishing the project, we had time to explore deeper into the jungle. Our treks led to awe-inspiring encounters: wild orangutans, hornbills, monitor lizards, gibbons, siamangs, macaques, and even tracks from elephants and tigers. Every step felt like walking through a living, breathing nature documentary.

I truly believe this part of Sumatra is one of the most serene and beautiful places on Earth. It’s humbling to be in a space so untouched, yet so profoundly impacted by the dedication of conservationists and local communities.

Predator-proof corrals have proven to be an effective solution, ensuring that livestock remains safe overnight and fostering positive community attitudes toward coexisting with wildlife, while Sumatran Rangers and Raw Conservation adventurers work tirelessly to build them.

The People Behind the Project

One of the most meaningful aspects of the trip was getting to know the rangers of the Sumatran Ranger Project. These are some of the kindest, most passionate individuals I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. Their commitment to protecting both wildlife and the communities that share space with them is deeply inspiring.

“As I reflect on this experience, I feel incredibly grateful - not just for the adventure and the wildlife, but for the connections made and the collective sense of purpose shared. I’m already looking forward to my next return”.

Until next time, Sumatra - Toronto Zookeeper, Sarah.

Protecting the Leuser Ecosystem

The Leuser Ecosystem is more than just a forest—it is a haven that sustains life on a massive scale, and the last place on earth where Sumatran tigers, elephants, and rhino coexist in the wild.

Losing it would mean losing species that have existed for millions of years, displacing communities, and accelerating climate change.

By supporting ethical conservation programs, responsible tourism, and sustainable local industries, we can ensure that this priceless ecosystem remains intact for future generations, protecting the wildlife and people that call it home.
